Antique Honiton Lace page 2

Gay Ann Rogers Needlework

Honiton lace was Queen Victoria's favorite lace and she chose it for her wedding dress and veil, as well as for the Royal Christening Dress. Lengths of Honiton Lace for study. All are from the 19th century. I find it interesting that all were made while Queen Victoria was still alive.

Most of these lengths came from a favorite long-time dealer in London, somebody I have known for many years.

Useful Pieces of Honiton Lace

I always love to find lengths of lace because they are useful.

As you will see in the future, I made a sampler of short to medium lengths of  lace by appliquing them to canvas.

As I was making my sampler, I was collecting these pieces of Honiton and thinking how pretty each might look, one to a small sampler with stitched words such as these:

Honiton Lace, Queen Victoria's Favorite Lace

Honiton lace was Queen Victoria's favorite and she ordered it for her wedding dress and veil. She continued to wear her wedding veil for special occasions: on her wedding anniversaries as long as Albert lived, to her children's weddings and for her jubilees. Some of the well-known photographs of Queen Victoria in her old age show her wearing her wedding veil.

Queen Victoria also chose Honiton lace for the royal Christening gown and all of her descendents wore it until recent years when it became too fragile. For recent Christenings, lacemakers made a replica of the original 19th century Christening gown worn by all three of Prince William's and Kate's children.
