Very Special Little Guilloche Enamel Montees

I began shopping for montees as soon as I learned about them from Marcie Stone all those years ago. They are usually little sparkling faceted glass set in metal and at their best, they do look like diamonds. For reference, those of you with my Queen Victoria will find the best I ever had in her necklace.

Then one day I found a small lot of special montees, not with faceted glass but with tiny guilloche enamel tops, each with a hand-painted rose.

These were made likely in the 1940's and 1950's but they could have been earlier also.

I bought the lot. I promptly wrote to the dealer and asked if she had more. It took me nearly a year to coax out of her hands her collection of them.

Please see several of them above. Notice that each little rose is different. I put a dime coin in the photo so you could see how small they are, and I flipped one upside down so that you could see the back.

The enamel montees came with three different ground colors: pale blue, pale green and white. The roses were all a pink to a pinkish coral. I spent a considerable amount of time matching them into pairs for my Guilloche Geometric.

Some of the kits have white ones, some pale green, some light blue. All work well. If you look carefully at the photo of Guilloche Geometric, you will see them on the center, along with pink and blue-green beads and pearls.

Description of Antique Guilloche Enamel  Geometric

I have loved guilloche enamel for almost as long as I have collected needlework tools, but I confess it all ramped up when Carolyn sold me the highest quality guilloche thimble I ever had a chance to buy.

It was then I began thinking of making a series of designs inspired by the thimble and by the needlework tools I had collected.

I shop all the time for beads and when I found the little guilloche montees, I knew I would make a geometric using them.

Guilloche Geometric is inspired by them and named for them. The Geometric is 6" x 6" and will serve as a box top or a framed design. The stitches and patterns include ribbon roses and needlepoint composites sometimes on top of a Tent Stitch ground. The beads are applied onto a center of Scotch Stitch.

Threads include 12 colors of Soie d'Alger, 2 different overdyed ribbons, 3 spools of Kreinik braid, and a ball of Pearl cotton. The design is stitched on a piece of soft ivory (color) congress cloth 11" x 11". Notice the design is not squared. If you wish to make it so, there is room to add rows.

The instructions are 24 pages long plus 6 Oversize Graphs, a title page and a color copy of the design.

If I do say so, this is an intricate, detailed geometric. It took me forever to put the kits together.
