Point de Gaze

Point de Gaze is a Brussels needlelace (yes, The Real Needlepoint). People not familiar with it are always so surprised at how fine and delicate it is. When a friend of mine first saw it, she said she thought it would be much larger. The rose on my heart is about 1.5" tall including the stem, the rose is about 7/8" wide.

Tiny and delicate. And old. At their youngest these roses are 110 years old.

Considering the fineness of the thread with which they are made, they are in great condition, but they are old and they are not perfect.

If you cannot tolerate slight irregularities, this project may not be for you.

If on the other hand you would enjoy holding in your hand a tiny piece of one of the beautiful laces from the 19th century, you may well come to love the romantic magic of Point de Gaze.

A Few More Details

I waited patiently for this project. Over a long time I collected pieces of distressed Point de Gaze and then painstakingly cut out the motifs. Unfortunately, distressed Point de Gaze costs almost as much as Point de Gaze in great condition. People have discovered that they can cut up pieces and harvest these beautiful roses an their motifs. In my journey I found several pieces of cut up Point de Gaze, including a basket about 2" tall with tiny flowers that resemble Group 4's abstract roses. Cost of the tiny basket?

Over $100.00.

Along the way I saw several beautiful large roses for sale and also some abstract motifs. The beginning price was about $70 per rose.

In the 30 years I have collected lace, Point de Gaze has always been so terribly expensive! I understand why: it is so wonderfully fine and romantic! All the roses and little motifs for my Point de Gaze projects have come from distressed pieces of lace. I would never cut up a piece in great shape. I treasure this lace!

The Rose above left is the one on my heart.

The one on the right is almost identical, except it has a tiny dimensional flap. The flap was almost all the way off my rose, so I finished taking it off.

All of these little roses are dimensional, except for the one in the lower right corner. Like my rose, it is missing its dimensional flap

These all have tiny faults but I think they would be fine if you handle them carefully.
